Royal Society for the Blind announced as Official Charity of 2018
On World Sight Day, October 12, the annual awareness day to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment, the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) has been announced as the official charity partner of the 2018 Adelaide 500 motorsport spectacular.
The RSB has supported blind and vision impaired South Australians for 133 years, ensuring they have access to world-class services and technology.
According to RSB Marketing and Fundraising Manager, Darrin Johnson, the partnership with the Adelaide 500 to be held on 1 March to 4 March 2018 will provide very welcome funds to allow the not-for-profit organisation to continue supporting South Australians living with the daily challenges of vision impairment.
“We are thrilled to be named as charity partner for this Adelaide 500 especially as the 2018 event marks the 20th Anniversary of this great race”.
“Every dollar donated to the RSB during the 2018 Adelaide 500 event will help make a massive difference in the lives of the people we help,” he says.
“Whether it’s about strengthening our ability to broaden our existing range of support services, or being able to offer more of our clients exciting new opportunities, any extra funds are always very, very welcome.”
South Australian Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell welcomed the partnership announcement.
“The RSB is a great South Australian charity which has been playing a vital role in the community for more than 130 years. This new partnership is a fantastic way to say ‘thank-you’ for their efforts and positive impact in our state,” he said.
“The Adelaide 500 is an iconic South Australian event which makes a significant economic contribution to our visitor economy and we are delighted to join forces with this outstanding organisation in helping to raise money for blind and vision impaired, kids, adults and their families right across South Australia.”
RSB Ambassador for the 2018 RSB/Adelaide 500 partnership is Brad Jones Racing’s Nick Percat.
“As a South Australian boy, I’m honoured to act as Ambassador for such an outstanding organisation,” says Nick.
“Before I was a driver, I was an Adelaide 500 fan and have attended every single event. I’m also the owner of two Labradors, so the relationship between the RSB’s Guide Dog program and my hometown race is a cause that is very close to my heart.”
While many people are familiar with the RSB’s world-class Guide Dog program, the organisation also provides many more, less recognised, services to assist blind and vision impaired people through every stage of their life.
From white cane training and assistance with learning how to get from A to B, to work skills training and employment services, access to the latest technology, social and sporting opportunities and much more.
“With an aging population, it is estimated that the number of vision impaired Australians will double by 2020. That means demand for our services in the future will be greater than ever. Potentially, this partnership will allow us to train and supply more Guide Dogs, help
fund the purchase of life changing technology and provide even more opportunities for blind and vision impaired South Australians to participate fully in our community,” says Mr Johnson.
“We really look forward to working with the Adelaide 500 team and contributing to this amazing event”.
Mr Johnson also welcomed the opportunity for the increased public and corporate exposure for RSB through the partnership.
“Have no fear, we’ll be doing everything we can to raise our visibility during the event and urging visitors to the Adelaide 500 to dig deep.”
2019 Official Charity Applications are NOW OPEN
The Adelaide 500 Charity Program began in 1999 in conjunction with the inaugural event. Over the past 19 years the Adelaide 500 has provided a platform for charities to raise funds and gain greater exposure and understanding of their charity amongst thousands of people. The event is a division of the South Australian Tourism Commission stages the Adelaide 500 and proudly appoints one Official Charity per event.
Applications for Expression of Interest (EOI) are now open for charities wishing to be appointed as the 2019 Clipsal 500 Adelaide Official Charity.
If you are thinking about applying to be the Official Charity for the 2019 event please consider the following:
- Does you charity have experience in events?
- Do you have a volunteer base large enough to effectively service the Clipsal 500 Adelaide which covers 97 hectares and in 2017 saw 244,350 people attend over four days?
- Do you have the ability to promote your association with the event through various channels?
- What could your charity bring to the Adelaide 500 that will enhance the event?
If your charity was appointed as the Official Charity 10 or more years ago, you may now apply to be considered to become the Official Charity of the event again.
If you are selected as the 2019 Official Charity you will receive the following benefits:
- 3 x 3 m marquee display site
- Recognition in the events Official Program
- Opportunity to supply ads for the on track 500FMTV network
- Tickets and prizes (including Course Car laps, signed merchandise etc) valued at over $3,000 to auction, with all proceeds going to your charity
- Recognition on the Adelaide 500 website and social media pages
- Use of the Adelaide 500 logo on the charities promotional material
- Assistance to approach a Supercars driver to become an ambassador for your Charity
- Opportunity to run fundraising initiatives at and in conjunction with the event to raise funds with their association with the event. Past charities have raised between $20k to $100k!
HOW TO APPLY
We invite you to send us a 2 page expression of interest addressed to: Lucy Davis, Marketing Assistant, GPO Box 1972, Adelaide, SA 5001.
Please address the following criteria in your expression of interest:
- Overview of your charity including key purpose, objectives, goals.
- Size of your volunteer base Brief summary of proposed activities or initiatives you would like to undertake at the event if your charity is successful
- Overview of marketing channels you have at your disposal to promote the association between your charity and the Adelaide 500.
- Organisational chart outlining who will manage and assist with the operations of running Official Charity projects at the event
- Examples of other business / event partnerships similar to the Adelaide 500 opportunity
- Highlight if you have been the Adelaide 500 Official Charity previously and if so which event year
- Please enclose a copy of your latest Annual Report or newsletter
Expressions of interest close Friday 1 December 2017.
Shortlisted charities will be contacted in early 2018 and will be appointed prior to the 2018 event.
